Hannah's Story

The dog was discovered at Hawkesbury Pound on July 18, cowering in a corner, shaking in fear, her eyes full of terror. The ranger had picked her up at Mulgoa Tip, and in the week she had been at the pound had not eaten a thing, no matter what the kennel hands tried. The dog had spent her life at the tip, and humans were creatures to avoid. Every bone in her body poked through her frail skin, but she was just too terrified to eat. No-one was going to rescue this terrified older girl whose teats showed she had borne many litters. No-one had ever cared, and probably never would. Her trip to the Rainbow Bridge was scheduled for the next day. It was only by a fluke of fate that a Doggie Rescue carer happened to be at the pound, and happened to look in the dog’s pen. When she saw the dog, it felt like a sword had been plunged into her heart, and her throat spasmed in emotion. Tears of pain rolled down her cheeks, and a sense of hopelessness engulfed her. Gradually through the haze an idea began to form - she realized that although so many of the other dogs she had seen would make their final journey soon, other dogs that were friendly and would be easier to rehome, it was this dog that she would take. This dog would be given a name for the first time in her life, and that name would be Hannah. It will probably take months of rehabilitation to earn Hannah’s trust, but this dog who has never felt the touch of a human, or known what it is liked to be loved and cared for, will one day know all those things. Hannah means "Gift of the Gods" - how appropriate....

Olivia came from the pound with a paralysed front leg. It looks like she was hit by a car some time ago. We had to amputate the leg and she has never looked back. Here is what her foster Mum says: Olivia is now nearly 4 months post op and continues to make amazing progress. Where once her daily walks were 30mts, now after a long walk she comes home with energy in reserve. Livvie had a severe car phobia, it would take a lot of wrestling to get her in. Now she knows the car takes her to exciting places, and runs to the car when i pick up the keys. We recently took her on holidays to a farm on the north coast. She loved the freedom, chasing roos and hanging with the farm dogs. After 2 weeks of swimming, canoeing, boating and staying at different places, she came home very relaxed and happy. Livvie is very affectionate to the family, now with the confidence to demand cuddles but the memories of her previous cruel life are still there. Often without warning she drops to the floor expecting to be hit, but thank god this is happening less and less. Her new mum and dad will need to be very kind and patient for her confidence to keep improving. Occassionally when I have a bad day I look at Livvie and remember that she has no-one except for Aunty Monika and me, and to count my blessings. Olivia weighs 18.5kg. Ophelia is a very gentle Greyhound who loves to give and receive lots of affection. She is house-trained, loves children, dogs, horses and is good with cats (well, she's scared of them too!). Ophelia, or "Phee" as her foster carer calls her, is a delightful dog with the prettiest face and a silk-like coat. Like most greyhounds she is a real couch potato as you can see from the photos. She doesn't need a huge amount of exercise, as she is built for speed not stamina. She gets out of the house about 3 times a day for a few laps of the paddock, then it's back on to the sofa to sleep. Phee does not seem to like the hustle and bustle of the inner city, the traffic seems to scare her so she would be best suited to a home in a quiet environment or ideally an acreage property. Phee travels well in the car, although she would prefer not to have to go anywhere! Phee is a quiet dog who rarely barks and is not destructive, but probably wouldn't like to be left on her own all day long. Is there a special person out there that would like to really help a sad dog have a better life? Zara is the most beautiful natured girl that has had a rough life. Zara has been waiting months for a kind new owner. She is wonderful with young kids and adults alike but was not socialised as a puppy with other dogs. Zara is a real softie with sad eyes. Her past owners went away and left her to fend for herself. Lucky for her there was a kind neighbour who alerted the authorities. And now luckily there is Doggie Rescue to give her another chance to live out the next half of her life never being left on her own wondering where her next meal is coming from. Zara was heartworm infected but has been treated by Doggie Rescue. Zara loves to go for a walk and swim in the dam. Zara will fetch sticks and do anything to gain your approval.She is only interested in being close to her carer more than anything else.
